After re-watching Zodiac last night I was sitting there wondering how the film was not in my top ten of 2007. This is a decades sprawling epic that is so unconventional in its narrative that I think I was a bit thrown off the first time I saw it. Characters are off screen for large chunks of time and it isn't until about an hour and a half in that a somewhat normal story about obsession starts to set in. This is also the best kind of procedural drama, one that just presents the facts as clearly as possible and doesn't try to cram a "story" into the details.
I guess the point I am getting at is what an amazing year for film 2007 was. A film that any other year should be getting all kinds of awards is left out because of such a bountiful amount of great films released this year. Granted, Zodiac isn't your normal Oscar fare but just the way it is constructed and the audacity it takes to tell the story in the way it does deserves some sort of attention.
