The American Cinema Editors nominations came out today. I wasn't sure about their importance as far as Oscar nominations go so I'll just leave it to Awards Daily to fill you in.
One of the proudest discoveries of this irrelevant website is that the Editors Guild is one of the most important guilds in the industry, probably even more so than the SAG and the WGA, in terms of figuring out Oscar’s Best Picture. It turns out that directing and editing are adjoined, in a way. Sometimes editing and directing split but chances are the winning best pic is also the frontrunner for editing. This has been mostly true over the many years the Ace has been handing out awards. Half of the nominees will be best pic friendly and half stand out for their exceptional editing and have no chance at a BP nod.
Also, I found out that the Coen Brothers can be nominated under the pseudonym Roderick Jenkins. They have actually been nominated before for Fargo. It will actually be a real shame if they don't win this. It was easily the best edited film of the year. The other good news is that There Will Be Blood and Into the Wild keep showing up in all of the guild award nominations. At this point it would be a shock if either one of these don't get nominations come Oscar time.
