The DGA announced their nominees today, sort of the real first hint at what direction the Academy Awards will follow. The nominees are:
Paul Thomas Anderson - There Will Be Blood
Joel and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men
Tony Gilroy - Michael Clayton
Sean Penn - Into the Wild
Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
The biggest surprise here is the inclusion of Gilroy, leaving off both Joe Wright for Atonement and Jason Reitman with Juno, also absent is Tim Burton. Not that Gilroy doesn't deserve it, he does, but it is odd as a first time director to see his name listed among this group. I am happy with all of this list and would be thrilled if any of the other for win. At this point it has to seem that the Coen Brothers are the front runners but honestly, any one them could and deserve to win.
NOTE: Sorry if there are any format issues or misspelled words, I am posting this from my phone.
