The Produces Guild has announced their nominations today. At this point if any of these are not nominated for best picture at the Oscars it will be considered an upset. Into the Wild could conceivably sneak into the final five, maybe taking The Diving Bell and the Butterfly's place, but that film has been nominated in so many of the guild awards that it will be hard for it to be displaced. I have always thought that Into the Wild would be snubbed at the Oscars but that is based on nothing other than the feeling that almost all of my favorite movies seem to be absent from the ballots. Atonement and Sweeney Todd appear to be dead in the water as far as best picture nominations go at this point. Then again, nobody knows anything until the final five names are actually read. If these do in fact end up being the nominations for best picture it will be the strongest line up in a very long time. Here are the PGA nominations.
“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” (Miramax)
“Juno” (Fox Searchlight)
“Michael Clayton” (Warner Bros.)
“No Country for Old Men” (Miramax/Paramount Vantage)
“There Will Be Blood” (Paramount Vantage/Miramax)
