Simon Wincer has signed on to direct The Holy Road, a sequel to Dances With Wolves. The film is written by Michael Blake, who wrote the screenplay for Wolves as well as the two novels on which the two films are based.
The story picks up 11 years after Wolves as the Comanche tribe is in steady decline and the threat of white settlers looms. The title Holy Road refers to the transcontinental railroad, which is a symbol of the clash of civilizations.
Is there really a reason for this to be a sequel to Dances With Wolves? Is that name alone going to help this film be successful? I don't understand why they don't make this a stand alone film about Native Americans, especially if the main cast of the first film is not returning. I remember reading a few years ago about a rumored sequel that had Kevin Costner's wife being kidnapped by Indians and him going after her, to be honest I think it had the same title.
Dances With Wolves sometimes gets a bad rap because the film beat Goodfellas for best picture in 1990, and Costner beat Scoresese for director. This is unwarranted, Dances is just a really good movie.
Wincer most recently helmed the Steven Spielberg-produced Emmy winner Into the West. He also directed the Western miniseries Lonesome Dove.
